Interesting Take on Soils and Carbon Sequestration

Listened to the following on Quirks and Quarks:

Bio-Char: Cleaning up Carbon with Charcoal.

It’s the new black gold. No – not oil. In fact, it’s kind of the opposite of oil. Bio-char is an ancient technology that modern scientists are rediscovering as a way to take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. It’s a little like coal in reverse. We bury it in the dirt to offset global warming, and get a side benefit of enhancing soil fertility as well. Can charcoal go from barbequing our burgers to saving our bacon?
